Week 1

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

‘Tis the season!

The smell of wrestling mats is great. I think my next business venture is to bottle that and put it in a bar of soap.

One of my favorite parts has become watching parents get into wrestling. It’s a slow process for some. And a scary fast one for others! I’m excited to see each parent find their pace and love for this sport. This coming Sunday’s Quad will be fun for our kids, but will be great to watch parents experience a match for the very first time!

This Week Coming Up

Our schedule is going to have Tuesday and Thursday practices as usual. Wednesday this week will be an awesome experience for our U15 crew! I am bringing in DIII NCAA National Champion Joziah Fry from Johnson and Wales University to run practice. If all goes well he is going to be welcomed back every Wednesday to run that session!

Monday’s have been changed to help encourage getting more girls’ in our sport. It’s an emerging sport and has gathered a lot of momentum in New England. With colleges now providing opportunities for girls’ to compete more and more, we are seeing a need in our region to grow. If every team just had 10 girls on the roster we could operate an entire girls’ only season! I’m looking forward to that day soon. For now we are going to run a Free Girls’ Clinic from 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Monday December 11, 18th and they will join us for an open mat on December 24th in the morning (reminder that everything is optional!).

This coming Sunday is a quad against Milford, Scituate and Holliston. We will have assigned weight classes and scrimmage matches for everyone. Thursday will be “wrestle offs” to define the weigh classes. It is for U12 and U15 athletes, the U10 wrestlers will have a scrimmage before like we did this past Saturday!

A New Crop of Leaders Emerge

This year’s team seems to be something different. I don’t even want to MENTION 2020 at this point, but it really seems like we are back to a normal swing of things. The team has wrestlers who have been competing now for a few years straight and it has been making a huge difference. Watching leaders develop out of our 7th and 8th grade wrestlers is the best part. I don’t think the team has had more clearly defined leadership like it does this year. Inexperienced kids have such a great group of students to look up to at this point.

Nolan and Jeff compete for a takedown.

I was very happy to watch as the middle of our room was being directed by Nolan Roderick! Without much direction seeing him grab some of the younger kids and point them in the right direction. It's quick and effective direction that helps newer wrestlers learn how to go through a practice.

Our off-season has made a huge difference as well. Seeing wrestlers like Jeff Conely and Kevin Chawan make an immediate impression not only on our coaches but on the High School kids too.

Getting the team back together is just awesome. I love watching as every week the kids learn more and more. This year is going to be something special!

Additional Benefits Coming Soon

I’m going to be adding to this season!

Fill Up Your Cup!

I have spoken to a nutritionist in our area, Jennifer Hoyle started a company

“Fill Your Cup” which focuses on basic good nutrition for kids and adults.

I have asked if Jen could come in and speak with our kids and parents about some basic fuel for events. Easy tips and tricks to help educate all of us on better nutrition to fuel up for competition.

I am also talking to some different venues and businesses in our area for some fun parent nights. If you’re interested let me know! I wanted to do an activity potentially for parents who stick around for practice. Let me know if that’s an idea worth doing or if I’m a big lameo for trying!
