By November of 1776 the Revolutionary War began to turn in favor of the British war machine. The continental army was pushed out of New York completely chased further by pursuing forces and a small group of remaining continental troops remained. Each day troops either died or deserted leaving General Washington with a small force which found itself across the Delaware river staring at Trenton, NJ.

By some luck troops had made their way down to reinforce Washington driving his force to roughly 6,000 able bodied men. His plan was sneak across the river with about 2,400 strong soldiers and take back Trenton, NJ from the redcoats who remained.

Christmas night, General Washington and his troops engaged in one of the bravest attacks of the revolution as they broke through an ice jammed Delaware River. By December 26th the next morning troops had landed and were ready for battle.

An outstanding success Washingtons troops only suffered 3 casualties and 6 wounded, but they successfully drove the red coats from Trenton.

The battle was a major turning point for the confidence in Washington as a commander, for Congress support in the war effort, and for the Revolution itself.

The famous moment in time was captured in the "Washington Crossing the Delaware", an 1851 portrait by Emanuel Leutze depicting Washington and Continental Army troops crossing the river prior to the Battle of Trenton on the morning of December 26, 1776.
