Youth Iwo Jima

Youth Iwo Jima

Pearl Harbor was December 7, 1941. Japan pulled America into World War II. The American Pacific War was unique and saw some of the bloodiest and most terrifying battles to date.

Iwo Jima stood tall as a heavily defended island with 21,000 Japanese soldiers, a dense network of bunkers and artillery, and 11 miles of underground tunnels. The objective was to take over the two airfields supplying a Japanese attack and pushing through to mainland Japan.

Over 5 weeks saw violent attacks as it stands a rare instance where more American casualties were seen than enemy forces.

A reinforced platoon size patrol from E Company was ordered to climb to the summit of Mount Suribachi at the top of Iwo Jima and seize and occupy the crest. The patrol commander, First Lieutenant Harold Schrier, was handed a small battalion American flag to be raised on top to signal Suribachi's capture, if they reached the summit.

Once the top was secured by Schrier and his men, a length of Japanese water pipe was found among the wreckage, and the American flag was attached to the pipe and then raised and planted on top of Mount Suribachi which became the first foreign flag to fly on Japanese soil.

That flag was later removed and given back to the Navy. However, six marines had gone back with a larger American flag and attached that to a thicker piece of water pipe. As they raised that new symbol of freedom to the crest of Mount Suribachi a photo was taken by marine photographer Joe Rosenthal and it was named "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima".
